The UK has been facing a series of car part thefts. The police are investigating the organizations behind the dismantling network.
Citizens in the UK are facing an epidemic of car part theft. The police have noted an increase in the number of crimes involving dismantling.
Criminals have been organizing to strip external parts from vehicles in city centers, in front of houses, hospitals, at any time of the day. The theft happens within seconds.
According to Detective Superintendent Jim Munro of West Midlands Police, thieves are committing these thefts in public because it reduces the risk of being caught compared to stealing the entire car.
“We see all types of vehicles being stolen and dismantled as the needs dictate,” he said.
Detective Munro also reported that the theft of parts has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic and since the start of the Ukraine War. With the shortage of parts that were produced in Eastern Europe, organized crime has been increasingly dismantling cars in the UK.
The Home Office said it is working with the National Police Chiefs’ Council to offer “enhanced intelligence capability” to act against these crimes.
